Do South Dakota legislators want to legalize the killing of abortion providers?

That's the message you'd get from the headline of this Mother Jones article. The article has now been updated after legislators amended sloppily written legislation designed to allow pregnant women and their families to use deadly force to protect an unborn child from criminals attempting to kill the child. Now only women can use a justifiable homicide defense if they kill someone attempting to harm their unborn child.

The legislation was never intended to allow violence against abortion providers. Some times legislators aren't super careful in how they write legislation. That's one of the reasons why the legislative process allows for amendments.

But I'm sure we'll hear about the time South Dakota legislators wanted to allow the killing of abortionists for years to come.

  1. Frankly, they should have included ANYBODY wanting to help protect an unborn baby, simply adding "provided the violence is directed so as to cause the death of an unborn child the mother is not in the process of seeking to have killed at her own initiative via abortion."
